Who are the Maltese Falcons?
Falcons RFC was founded in 2005 by Robert Portelli together with Joseph Borg. It started life as a tag-rugby team of children aged 10 to 12 years old. The coaches thought the basics of the sport, including the rules of the game, passing skills, running straight forward and side stepping. Contact rugby was introduced at a later stage and the children were thought the rules of contact rugby, including safe tackling and getting tackled, how to hit, rucking, mauling, line outs and scrums. As time went by, the club grew larger and was able to add another age group. Falcons introduced their first U15/16s in 2009, coached by Robert Portelli with the help of Joseph Borg and managed to win their first U13s and U15s leagues by going unbeaten in all matches of the season. A year later, the club introduced its first U17's team. The team had a tough start to the season due to the strong opposition of Kavallieri, however the Falcons did not give up and ended up winning their first under 17s league in the same year.
In March 2010, Falcons went on tour in Sicily to face the Amatori Catania club and won both U14's and U16's matches 57-7. In the 2010 season, the older players of the U17s team participated in the Senior 10s league. Despite a tough start, the team made it to the finals placing second against Stompers. In the same year Falcons U13's, U15's and U17's won their respective leagues by going undefeated throughout the season. In January 2011 the Falcons were joined by South African coach Johan Van Der Linden. In June 2011 Falcons U17's and Falcons Seniors won the Puttinu Cares cup against B'kara Alligators while the Falcons Women’s team won the Malta International Airport 10's League. The Falcons Women’s team kept its dominance by winning both 7s and 10s leagues in 2013 and 2014 together with 7s League and Gozo 7s tournament in 2015.
In the 2013/2014 season Falcons debuted their first official Seniors’ team, which placed third in the Second Division League and won the Mediterranean Bank Cup. The following season, the club presented a new kit for the Seniors’ team which won the Second Division League. The Falcons would like to thank everyone involved in the club and those who helped the growth of the club which led to the increased success of all its teams.
